Squirrel

Friday 3rd March 2023

Squirrel Class are continuing to show so much progress and enthusiasm towards their work. They have had a brilliant start to this year!

Our topic this term is called ‘Bright Lights, Big City’. The children have been really enthusiastic about this topic and have really enjoyed learning all about the UK, its physical features and London. It has been lovely to see the children asking lots of questions. In Science, we have been learning about the seasons and in DT the children have been designing and making their own taxi’s.

In Writing before half term, we read ‘Katie in London’. We started off this book with our own ‘trip’ to London in the classroom. The children enjoyed looking at the different landmarks and buildings in London. They wrote their own stories about Katie in London which were brilliant to read. We are now looking at the traditional tale: ‘Dick Whittington’ and different characters and settings in the book.

In Maths, we challenged the children by looking at shape and measurement. We are now continuing to develop their addition and subtraction skills with number facts up to 20. They are really growing in their understanding and independence.

We are really looking forward to the rest of this term and continuing to learn more about our topic!

Friday 9th December 2022

We can’t believe how quickly this term has gone! The children have really impressed us with their hard work and engagement with our lessons this term.

In Writing, the children made some amazing Christmas trees to help them write a set of instructions on how to make a Christmas decoration. They have also really enjoyed our Art topic on colour, our Science topic on Human Senses and learning more about Geography. They have produced some amazing work and have shown so much improvement from when they first joined us in September.

The children have also been busy practising their Nativity and they have made us really proud with how well they have been learning their songs and joining in with the dances. We hope you enjoy the Nativity as much as the children have been practising it!

Friday 18th November 2022

We have had a brilliant start to this half term and the children have been working really hard!

In Writing, we have been reading ‘Old Bear’ by Jane Hissey where a set of toys come up with lots of ideas to rescue an old bear from the attic. The children came up with their own ideas to rescue our own class squirrel, including flying paper aeroplanes and building towers out of bricks. They have continued to practise using capital letters, full stops and writing neatly to produce amazing final stories.

In Maths, we have been looking at numbers all the way up to 100. The children have spent a lot of time counting and using their place value knowledge to identify the number of tens and ones in bigger numbers and to recognise patterns.

In Curriculum time, we have started learning about Geography and in Art we have been looking at the colour wheel. The children really enjoyed using paints to mix primary colours together to create secondary colours. In Science, we have also started learning about the body and human senses.

We are looking forward to the rest of the learning this term and starting to practise our Nativity!

Friday 30th September 2022

We have had a fantastic start to the year in Squirrel Class! The children have settled well into their new classroom and it has been lovely to start getting to know them.

In Writing, we have been reading a book all about memories and how a little boy uses objects to help an old lady remember her past. The children have discussed their own memories of different events and have been thinking about what different objects might remind people of. They have been working hard at using their knowledge of phonics to start writing more independently.

In Maths, we have been looking at place value and number. The children have been practising counting forwards and backwards from a given number between 0 and 30 as well as learning how to write numbers in words. They have been using their knowledge of tens and ones to decide whether a number is also bigger or smaller.

The children have also started to learn about Childhood in our History topic and they are excited to learn more about the 1950s as the topic progresses.
