Physical Education

At Priorswood Primary School, we treat each child as an individual, helping them to develop into proactive, hard-working, aspirational and polite young people. We also have high expectations of our pupils academically and strive to help them achieve in all areas.  We achieve this by providing a curriculum that achieves excellence through inspiring curiosity and developing passion and talents.

Why we do it

A high-quality Physical Education Curriculum inspires pupils through engaging them in physically demanding activities and competitive sports. This allows children to achieve excellence becoming confident learners that can support their health and fitness. We provide our children with opportunities to compete in sports and other activities which allows them to persevere, build character and embed values such as respect, tolerance, integrity and courage.

At Priorswood Primary School, in conjunction with the aims of the National Curriculum, our Physical Education teaching offers opportunities for children to:

  • To develop competence in a broad range of Physical Activities
  • To create pupils who are physically active for a sustained period of time
  • For pupils to engage in competitive sporting activities
  • To inform children to lead healthy, active lives.

The National Curriculum will provide a structure and skill development for the Physical Education curriculum being taught throughout the school, which will contain cross-curricular links where possible.

What this looks like for Priorswood.

We implement this through providing children with the opportunity to experience a range of different sports, through what they receive during lesson time, clubs, festivals and tournaments. We also encourage children to stay active whilst at home by providing them with physical activity challenges at home. We also embed physical activity into our daily routine through the Golden Mile. We implement the curriculum in KS2 by having a two yearly programme, which allows them to experience a range of sports. In KS1 and EYFS we focus on having a targeted impact on meeting targets set out in the National Curriculum which develops the skills necessary to access all the sports we offer in KS2.

By the end of KS1

Our pupils will have developed fundamental movement skills which have allowed them to grow in confidence, they will have accessed a wide range of opportunities including: swimming, Competitive activities and festivals. They will have participated in team games which has developed their perseverance, Tolerance and respect. They will be confident in participating in physical activity and begin to understand how to lead healthy active lives.

By the end KS2

Our pupils will be experienced in a range of different sports, have competed against themselves and others not only within the trust but with other schools as well. They will have developed a sense of excellence through being successfully in these competitions and therefore will feel connected as part of a community. They will be confident in their physical abilities and lead healthy active lives whilst upholding the values they have been taught through their physical education experiences.

We endeavour to ensure that the Physical Education curriculum we provide will give children the confidence and motivation to continue to further develop their skills into the next stage of their education and life experiences.
